Having edited a popular rentals website for over 8 years, we've picked up a few experiences along the way. One particular nugget of wisdom is the shock discovery that old people really can't spell.
Age can bring wisdom and experience; but it can also engender a propensity to read right wing tabloids, remember poorer times as "the good ole days" and smell a little bit of pee. Old people also often have a belief that kids spend too much time on Facebook or txt messaging and therefore can't spell.
Bring back the 3R's, they cry!
So it's time to explode this myth of literate baby boomers as utter rot: we can confirm they are just as useless as kids. We've now read millions of words written by rental owners who sit in the 45-65 age group and in truth a good proportion of them can't string a sentence together.
So what, you say?!
When trying to sell a dream vacation, the inability to spell makes you look plain dumb. It's an unbelievably lazy, and costly, mistake.
Here's a fun list of spelling mistakes we see on a daily basis:
acomodation
Always easy to remember - 2c's, 2m's. Correct spelling: accommodation
comunial
We've seen lots of people with comunial pools over the years, maybe it's an accent thing? Correct spelling: communal
dinning
If you mean somewhere to eat food, the correct spelling is: dining
facilites
Hopefully a good rental has lots of these. Correct spelling: facilities
jaccuzi
A very enticing feature, especially if readers understand what you mean. Correct spelling: jacuzzi
restrant
Lovely places for dinning... erm dining. Correct spelling: restaurant
sattelite
Normally in relation to TV. Correct spelling: satellite
towles
After a soak in the jacuzzi, you dry yourself with one. Correct spelling: towels
Spell checkers have been included in every computer since 1986. Using one could make you more money than you'd imagine.
