Holiday guide to Devon, England
With an improving British climate, it's not hard to see why Devon is such a popular holiday destination for many of us. Where you decide to stay very much depends on what you want from a holiday in the region but with magnificent beaches, rolling countryside, stately homes and parks, this county offers something for everyone.
Families are generally drawn towards the coast. Devon offers everything from quaint fishing villages to full blown family resorts offering entertainment for kids of all ages. As well as farming, tourism plays a big part in the regions economy, the popularity of the area has meant care is taken to preserve areas of the countryside and coastlines, in short Devon hasn't been ruined by over development and fake resorts.
Although the coast is never far away, exploring further inland introduces the visitor to the rural side of Devon. On the edge of Dartmoor and Exmoor for example you'll discover many quaint villages reached only by driving carefully down narrow country lanes. In these parts you'll see local farming, pretty thatched cottages, pubs and restaurants that offer local brews, good homecooked food and friendly conversation.
Travelling to Devon
Good motorway links using the M4 and M5 mean a journey by car from London to Exeter takes a little over 3 hours. However extra time should be allowed during bank holidays and peak summer weeks. The AA (www.theaa.com) and RAC (www.rac.co.uk) both offer free route planning services on their websites to plan ahead.
Travelling to Devon by bus is made easier using National Express. Coaches leave from most UK cities and connect with Exeter. Visit their website to book tickets online and check the timetable and routes available.
By rail First Great Western and Arriva Trains Wales leave London Paddington and travel to Exeter and Plymouth. South West Trains leave London Waterloo to Exeter and Honiton and Virgin Trains travel from Birmingham New Street Station to Exeter and Plymouth.
