As demand for family adventure holidays rises, the range of fun activities for children widens accordingly. What better way to bond with your children than going on a family holiday with plenty of activities for kids of all ages. If you haven’t done it yet, then it’s time you did. Here are some fun ideas for a family holiday in Kent, a region offering plenty of activities for children in the southeast of England...
Get high... literally... on a holiday in Bedgebury National Pinetum & Forest near Goudhurst. At a height of 40ft anyone over the age of 10 can go zip-lining through the treetops in this Kent arboretum. Exhilarating, even a bit scary at times; but what fun to scale rope ladders, and swing, climb and crawl through the trees.
Alternatively, go zip-lining at the giddy height of 65ft and enjoy stunning views of Leeds Castle at the same time: this famous castle near Maidstone is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Kent. The adventure course there is pretty big too, with 38 zip-wire crossings and giant obstacle courses with bridges, walkways, ladders and tunnels.
Perhaps you don’t like riding wires under your own steam? Then choose someone else’s... enjoy vintage steam train rides through the country on the Spa Valley Railway and Kent & East Sussex Railway, or a miniature train ride near the sea on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. How about even bigger attractions? Then clamber aboard three historic warships at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Maybe you feel the need to dig deeper for ideas to keep children happy? Then head for Diggerland, an adventure park in Strood where children and adults can ride, drive and operate full-size JCB’s.
This is amazing fun... lose your children in a yew hedge maze planted over 100 years ago. You’ll find it at Hever Castle & Gardens, near Edenbridge. If your children find their way out, take them to the boating lake next - there’s an island water maze to tackle with punishing water jets if they tread on the wrong stepping stones. There is also a wooden adventure playground in the grounds for children up to fourteen, and special equipment for those under five.
Are your children a bit wild at times? Then let them meet their match at a wildlife park in Kent: visit Howletts Wild Animal Park near Canterbury or Port Lympne Wild Animal Park at Hythe. For something tamer, visit Farming World at Faversham or The Hop Farm Family Park near Paddock Wood, it’s one of Kent’s busiest family attractions.
