Myrtle Beach or North Myrtle Beach: Which should you choose for your vacation?
To beach or not to beach; that is NOT the question. The real question when vacationing in South Carolina is: Myrtle or North Myrtle Beach? One offers a little bit less hustle and bustle, while the other offers a nice proximity to the hot spots.
Much to many tourists’ surprise, Myrtle and North Myrtle are two separate incorporated cities, and before you ask, there is no South Myrtle Beach. There are three main differences, a) crowds, both parking and beaches b) community feeling c) condo age.
For the young (and young at heart), Myrtle Beach is more catered to suit your needs. Broadway at the Beach at night is the perfect culmination of people looking to have a great time at night. Featuring 10 bars and clubs within a horseshoe shaped forum, visitors can dabble in a variety of music genres all within one area. Broadway at the Beach is one of the hot spots for college aged kids. However, North Myrtle Beach rivals Broadway at the Beach with their rendition, known as Barefoot Landing.
North Myrtle Beach and all its allure is marveled in serenity, calmer crowds and a more community-like atmosphere. From the frequent shagging gatherings, to Music on Main every Thursday in the summer, don’t think that this town is dead. It’s just not a college party town--and for some that’s exactly what they are looking for.
When comparing parking between the two cities, it is night and day. Myrtle Beach parking is a nightmare! City parking in Myrtle Beach uses the meter system - which is not a problem in metropolitan areas, however Myrtle Beach is NOT a metropolitan area. It’s a seasonal city so Myrtle Beach will capitalize every chance they get. North Myrtle Beach on the other hand has more free oceanfront parking areas than you can count on four hands!
North Myrtle Beach is also home to many of the newer condominium buildings. These newer buildings feature some of the nicest amenities around. For instance, Laguna Keyes and Blue Water Keyes in Crescent Beach offer more cosmopolitan accommodations while still maintaining those perfect ocean views. And let’s not forget the Prince Resort located right behind the Cherry Grove Pier. The Prince Resort has a 6th floor pool and spa area overlooking the Atlantic and the pier. These and many others along the North Myrtle Beach coast have all been built within 6 years.
I also read in an article that North Myrtle Beach has “wider” beaches, as in the space between the dunes and the ocean water. While this isn’t 100% true, I do find that the beaches in North Myrtle are generally less crowded and do indeed have a ‘wider’ feel to them.
It’s all about what you are looking for. For some, North Myrtle Beach is the perfect place to relax without thousands of college kids invading the streets and beaches. I’d recommend this area for the mature, looking for a beach and a little R&R. But if you’ re looking for an area with a lot more nightlife, amusement parks and a more festive atmosphere, Myrtle Beach, SC is definitely the place for you.
