Tenerife is a great place to spend the holidays. Tourism is a major part of the economy with numerous resorts and developed coastal areas catering to the holiday traveller. The south, which is hotter and drier than the rest of the island, is the location of numerous resorts and holidays locations. The Moratoria act passed by the Canarian Parliament makes it impossible to build any hotels unless it can be classified as 5 star quality, and include services as such as golf courses. The goal of this act was to improve the standard of service for holiday travellers.
Playa de las Americas is known as the nightlife centre for Tenerife. Built in the 1960’s as a holiday resort, it sits beside the town of Los Cristianos and stretches north to the Costa Adeje. It is home of the world famous “The Veronicas”, hosting three floors of bars and clubs. There are also numerous beaches, some natural and some man made with imported sand. There are many world-class facilities and opportunities for holidays that include more than sea and sand, such as quality shopping centres, theatres, water-parks, animal parks and golf courses.
Los Cristianos was for many years a fishing village. Much of original Canarian architecture still exists in the older buildings. However, now the town also offers the perfect experience for your holidays. There are two beautiful beaches, a plethora of bars, restaurants and night clubs and a sunny climate year round, as well as a host of accommodations for all budgets. You can also find excursions to include dolphin and whale watching tours or game fishing trips and party cruises.
In the North of Tenerife, the island is more lush and green. Here the best place for holidays is the Puerto de la Cruz. The old harbour town still has its original charm, now mixed with many northern European styled clubs and bars. While Puerto de la Cruz maintains its cosy atmosphere, it manages to be sophisticated at the same time, a perfect spot for the more mature holiday maker.
If none of these things appeal to you while on holidays in Tenerife visit the Magma Arte y Congreso Centre in Costa Adeje featuring concerts, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and a Jazz Festival. Or see San Miguel Castle for Medieval Nights with jousting, sword fighting and pageantry. Or take the kids to Pleasure Island - an amusement park for all ages.
