There are numerous restaurants on Tenerife serving all types of cuisine. During your holidays you can sample everything European from French pastries, to German sausage or Italian pasta. There are also a host of restaurants with a Latin American flavour, serving dishes from Brazil to Mexico. But while you’re on the island you might want to try some of the local cuisine as well.
Tenerife sits on the ocean off the coast of Africa. As such a profuse selection of seafood is a large part of the diet. The most common varieties are the comb-tooth blennies, the sea bream, red porgy, gold lined bream and grouper. You can also find Atlantic mackerel, sardine and Moray eels. Often seafood is simply prepared, either boiled or baked. During your holidays make sure to try wrinkly potatoes, or papas arrugadas, covered with a local mojo sauce to augment your fish.
The word mojo is probably from Portugal and describes a local Tenerife sauce. It comes in a variety of colours, flavours and textures, usually served on the side so you can choose how much you want. Green mojo is made from coriander, parsley, and garlic, while red mojo is spicy and made from a mix of hot and sweet peppers. Other ingredients used include saffron, cheese and almonds. Mojos are typically served with meat and fish dishes, but can also be served on potatoes or for dipping bread.
Red meats are also available on Tenerife with beef, lamb, rabbit and goat all available. Pork and poultry can be found too, especially during festival times and holidays. Tenerife exports over three thousand tons of cheese each year. Typically cheese is used as an appetiser, starter course or snack. Goat’s cheese is the most common, but cheese from sheep and cows can also be found.
Wine making dates back to before the Spain conquest. There are five regions on the northern archipelago where wine is still a primary industry. So, while on your holidays, make sure to sample some of the local cuisine, or venture up into the hills and visit one of the local wineries yourself.
One thing is certain - you won’t go hungry on this island.
